The skies over one Norwegian town is set to explode in a cornucopia of colour as Søgne in South Norway attempts to set a new Guiness World Record for the biggest ever fireworks display on Saturday.

The town of just over 10,000 inhabitants will attempt to beat the record set last year by super-city Dubai, and claim the title of the biggest and best fireworks display ever.

On Saturday the six-minute show will begin and end with a bang, when organizers, local business Svea Fyrverkerier in cooperation with the local hardware store Sør-Tre, will explode 530,520 fireworks. This equals around 1,500 fireworks or 10 kilo of gunpowder per second.

The firework show will go off in joint celebration of the switching on of the Christmas lights in Søgne and 15,000 people are expected to enjoy both events. In the audience, will be officials from the Guinness World Records to referee the record attempt.

Anders Sture, general manager of Svea Fyrverkerier, said: "The sky will be 'painted' in red, white and blue in order to create a gigantic Norwegian flag. This is our tribute to the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian constitution.”

The current world record in fireworks was set in Dubai during last year's New Year's celebration. 479,651 fireworks were set off in six minutes. This means that the world record attempt in Søgne has a very small margin for success.

Sture said: “After several months of planning, all permissions are in place. It will be a delight if we manage to bring a world record to Søgne and Norway.”

Fireworks and pyrotechnics equipment has come from Norway, Sweden and Finland for the record attempt.

Sture says: "We hope that this will become a people’s party that will go into the history books. At the same time it is important for us to make this world record attempt in a safe way. The Red Cross and other volunteers will be on site to help create safe conditions around the event, and we really appreciate that.”

It was the local driving force and fireworks dealer Frank Abildsnes at Sør-Tre in Søgne who made the fireworks producer Svea Fireworks to become interested in the idea of a world record attempt. After some thought, Svea figured out that it was possible to do. On Saturday November 29th, the judgement will be made on whether it will be a world record or not.

In ieder geval
