Forget Sydney, New York or London when it comes to New Years fireworks displays. According to Guinness, Funchal is the undisputed champion and home to the Biggest Fireworks Display in the World.

While the feat will only be published later this year, Madeira learnt last week of its record-setting achievement.
Madeira Tourism Secretary, Joo Carlos Abreu confirmed that an inspector from the Guinness Book was in Funchal over the festive period to verify, in person, the regions long-standing claim to fame.
Shortly afterwards, the third-best selling book in the world (after the Bible and the Koran) confirmed Madeira was the place to be for New Years revellers.
The display in Madeira this year cost the regional government 1.2 million euros, in what that covered 2.7 kilometres around the city of Funchal and based on Vivaldis Four Seasons.
Between Christmas and New Year, hotels in Madeira recorded an occupancy rate of 94 percent. And with its inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records, it now looks set to push this figure closer to the 100 percent target at the end of 2007.

The 2007 fireworks display makes it to the Guinness Book of Records!
The city of Funchal in Madeira Island has achieved to register a Guinness World Record with its pyrotechnic New Year's Eve exhibition for 2007 which involved 17 tons of fireworks, 660.300 detonations, 8.000 explosions per minute and more than 10 minutes long! Madeira holds the title of "largest firework display in the world

Guinness World Records', an organisation which certifies all new records set at a world level, has just given the firework display on Madeira at the start of the New Year the title of “largest firework display in the world”. This record that has been achieved shall appear in the new edition of the Guinness World Records, together with a photograph depicting the firework show.

A team from Guinness has been on Madeira to assess the firework display. To check the true size of the firework display that heralds the New Year in, on New Year’s Eve inspectors visited the 37 firework points spread out throughout the region. In addition, they made helicopter flights over the area, to become aware of the distances between the different explosion points.

At midnight, the technicians from Guinness had the chance to bear witness to the firework display at Funchal. They paid special attention to the synchronism between the firing of the fireworks from the many stations spread out across the city.

The decision was announced at about 1:30 am of 1 January. The Secretary for Tourism and Culture of the Madeira Islands was still celebrating the dawning of the New Year, and the technicians from the Guinness company had already gone to meet with the governor to hand over a “temporary certificate” officially granting the title to Madeira. At São Tiago Fort there was a small symbolic ceremony for the handing over of this diploma. The official certificate should arrive in Madeira over the next few days.

This prize is excellent publicity for the Madeira Islands overseas. The Guinness World Records is the third most read book in the world, after the Bible and the Koran.

The firework display at the turn of the year is part of the New Year Celebration Programme on Madeira, which is the responsibility of the Regional Secretariat for Tourism and Culture. This year, the company that executed this event was Macedo’s Pirotecnia.
