Kreeg net een mailtje uit Malta dat er een vuurwerkfabriek op Gozo de lucht in is gegaan. Volgens lokale media zijn er op dit moment 2 doden en 2 gewonden.

Two men lost their lives and at least another two have been injured, propably seriously, in a fireworks factory explosion near Gharb in Gozo at about 6.10 pm. today, according to preliminary reports.

Eyewitnesses said they saw a big mushroom-shaped cloud over the scene.

Three explosions were heard over a wide area.

No other details were immediately available.

This was the fifth fireworks factory explosion this year. A man died in an explosion at the August 15 fireworks factory in Dwejra, Mosta on August 13 and another died last May at St Catherine’s Fireworks Factory in Marsaxlokk.

Two men lost their lives in February at the St Sebastian Fireworks Factory in Qorm and another two escaped unhurt in another explosion at St Bartolomeo Factory in Gharghur in April.''

''At least two men are believe to have died and another two have been seriously injured in a powerful blast that has rippred through a fireworks factory near Gharb in Gozo this evening.


Eyewitnesses say three explosions were heard in the area of Toni tal-Gharb.


A man and a woman were identified from the debris, and rushed out of the scene on an ambulance. Another two victims are believed injured while another two people are still unaccounted for, police sources told MaltaToday.

One Zebbug resident told MaltaToday the windows of his living room rattled violently with the blasts.

This is the third fireworks factory explosion this year. Only two weeks ago, a Mosta man died in an explosion at the August 15 fireworks factory in Dwejra, Mosta on 13 August. Another died in May at St Catherine’s fireworks Factory in Marsaxlokk. Two men lost their lives in February at the St Sebastian Fireworks Factory in Qormi.

Gozo police, together with Civil Protection personnel are on the scene at the moment and are currently working through the smouldering debris.''

Pfff dat gaat echt niet goed, de 5e fabriek al dit jaar.
Dat kan zo niet lang meer goed gaan denk ik, zeker met druk van de europese unie zal er toch iets gaan veranderen daar denk ik.
Respect voor de slachtoffers!

Inmiddels 3 doden.

Three people lost their lives, one is in a critical condition and another seriously injured in a fireworks factory explosion near Gharb in Gozo at about 6.10 pm. today, the police said.

They said that it was not excluded that there had been more people on site at the time of the explosion and the search is continuing.

Eyewitnesses said they saw a big mushroom-shaped cloud over the scene.

Three explosions were heard over a wide area.

The fireworks were for the feast of Our Lady of Victories being celebrated in Xaghra on Wednesday.

This was the fifth fireworks factory explosion this year. A man died in an explosion at the August 15 fireworks factory in Dwejra, Mosta on August 13 and another died last May at St Catherine’s Fireworks Factory in Marsaxlokk.

GHARB - Minder dan een maand na de explosie van een vuurwerkfabriek bij Mosta is Gozo vanavond opgeschrikt door drie zware klappen. Rond 6.15 ontplofte een vuurwerkfabriek in de buurt van Gharb. De rookpluimen zijn tot in de verre omtrek te zien, en de knallen waren op vele kilometers afstand nog te voelen. In het centrum van Victoria trilden de ramen.

Op dit moment is er nog vrij weinig bekend over schade en slachtoffers, maar twee mensen zouden de ontploffingen niet overleeft hebben en twee anderen zijn nog vermist. Nog eens twee mensen zijn gewond geraakt, ze zouden er slecht aan toe zijn. Dit is het vijfde ongeluk met een vuurwerkfabriek op Malta dit jaar.

Er is een 4e doden te betreuren volgens de Times of Malta.

Malta Today spreekt over 3 doden, een 4e man, de eigenaar van de fabriek zou worden vermist, 2 van de doden zijn de vrouw en 17 jarige zoon van de eigenaar.

Another two men were seriously injured with one of them being in a critical condition. Two of the victims were Noel Farrugia, the son of factory owner Ninu, who is believed to be the fourth victim, found at 9.30 p.m. and Noel's wife Antoinette.


Gozo minister Giovanna Debono was among the people on site.

Four dead in Gharb fireworks factory: father, mother and son, and another man dead. Two injured flown to Malta.

A family perished in a fireworks factory explosion in Gharb in the area of Birbuba, next to the St Dimitri chapel.

Three victims are Nenu Farrugia, owner of the Fontana Brothers factory, and his wife Antoinette and his son Noel. Another male victim is dead while another two people have been flown to Malta by AFM helicopter, police sources told MaltaToday.

The two casualties from the Gharb fireworks explosion were brought separately to Malta by the AFM Air Wing’s helicopter, to be further treated for their serious injuries. AFM technicians from the Explosives Ordnance Disposal of Third Regiment were earlier conveyed urgently by helicopter on site of the explosion to render the area safe, and assist in the search of missing individuals.

Kreeg vannacht ook een berichtje uit Malta over dit wederom tragische nieuws. Waar het een paar weken terug in Mosta "bijzonder" leek dat er iets mis ging nadat al het vuurwerk gereed was, is het gisteren in Gozo op hetzelfde moment fout gegaan. Ook ditmaal werden de laatste voorbereidingen getroffen voor een show die 3 dagen later zou moeten plaatsvinden. Een groot deel van het vuurwerk dat ontploft is, was vroeg in de ochtend pas gearriveerd en lag nog gereed in enkele vrachtwagentjes. Dit vuurwerk was gemaakt door de St. Joseph Fireworks Factory uit Ghaxaq (die ruim een week geleden het festival in Bilbao gewonnen hebben). In 2005 is er ook al eens een explosie geweest bij dezelfde fabriek op Gozo. Toen gelukkig zonder slachtoffers, maar daarbij zijn destijds wel 8 van de 10 ruimtes vernietigd. De explosie van gisteren kwam 3 jaar nadat de fabriek opnieuw opgebouwd was.

Het is overigens niet de Fontana Brothers Fireworks Factory, maar de Farrugia Fireworks Factory in Gharb. De slachtoffers komen op één na allemaal uit dezelfde familie. Vader en eigenaar (Nenu Farrugia, 67), zijn zoon (Noel Farrugia, 31) met vrouw (Antoinette Farrugia ,27 (afkomstig uit Fontana)) en een medewerker (Jean Pierre Azzopardi, 27). De twee andere slachtoffers zijn de broer van Noel (Raymond Farrugia, 35) en de zwager van Raymond (Paul Micallef, 32).

Dit brokstukje is op 800 meter afstand van de fabriek teruggevonden.
Geeft toch nog maar eens de kracht van de explosie weer.

Kreeg net even een update uit Malta.

De 2 gewonden zouden voor 80% verbrand zijn, en ze zeggen dat de kans klein is dat ze het overleven.

Kreeg ook te horen dat de vrouw die omgekomen is ook nog eens zwanger zou zijn, 1 groot drama dus.

Nog een laatste update;

Ook de 2e gewonde is overleden, het is al een wat ouder bericht maar ik kwam het pas net tegen.

Totaal aantal doden is hierdoor op 6 komen te staan, het aantal mensen wat tijdens de explosie in de fabriek was.

Vandaag was trouwens de eerste begrafenis van 1 van de 6 doden.

''Gharb fireworks blast - first funeral underway

The funeral has started in Xewkija of Jean Pierre Azzopardi, one of the six victims of the explosion at the Farrugia Brothers fireworks factory in Gharb.

People lined the streets and several hundred walked behind the coffin of the 27-year-old festa enthusiast as it was carried to the Church, accompanied by the Perkursur Band.

Among those present for the funeral Mass are members of the Farrugia family which lost five of its members in the explosion.

The funeral of fireworks factory owner Nenu, his sons Ray and Noel, his daughter-in-law Antoinette and son-in-law Peter Paul Micallef will be held tomorrow in their home town Fontana. Ray's widow and son, as well as one of Nenu's daughters are bravely attending this afternoon's funeral.

Leading the congregation at Xewkija are Jean Pierre Azzopardi's family, President George Abela, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and PL deputy leader Anglu Farrugia, representing party leader Joseph Muscat.

Members of the Red Cross (Gozo Branch) formed a guard of honour as the coffin was carried into the church. Jean Pierre's sister is a member of the Red Cross and was on one of the ambulances which rushed to Gharb when the fireworks factory blew up last Sunday week.
