The alarm over "firecracker tourism" has not only spread to Valencia. European newspapers from Germany and the Netherlands, two of the nationalities of some of the tourists arrested for setting off homemade firecrackers during the Fallas festival, also report concern about the proliferation of these incidents. "Insecurity," "real battles," and "explosive wars" are some of the terms used in newspapers such as the German "Bild" and the Dutch "De Telegraaf." And in all cases, they blame their compatriots for carrying out these practices in the Valencian capital.
German and Dutch newspapers are well aware of the problems with these types of devices, which look more like real bombs than firecrackers. As the newspaper "Bild" reports when referring to the Fallas festival: "In recent years, there have been more and more problematic incidents: groups from Germany, the Netherlands, and England have made the city unsafe with illegal firecrackers." The European media, far from turning a blind eye to several of their compatriots who came to Valencia for the Fallas festival to wreak havoc, are placing the blame for these uncivil acts squarely on them.
In Germany, they are fully aware of the origin of these powerful and virulent devices: they are homemade. This is what they explain in the "Bild" article. They also emphasize: "It was a German group that organized a home-made gathering to detonate their fireworks. Shortly after, the masked individuals set fire to several kilos of firecrackers, causing considerable damage."
From the very beginning of the Fallas week, the Valencia Police had their sights set on groups of foreigners traveling to the Valencian capital motivated by so-called "firecracker tourism." Their sole motivation for the trip was to detonate kilos and kilos of gunpowder. Officers set up prevention measures at key points, such as the Turia River, to stem the wave of illegal fireworks. As part of the surveillance operations, the National Police arrested 12 people between the ages of 21 and 44 for detonating these types of explosives. Authorities considered these individuals to be part of an organized criminal group. They were also charged with illegal possession of explosives, public disorder, and assaulting law enforcement officers.
Those arrested were mainly of German or Dutch origin. They organized through social media to meet in areas of Valencia to detonate their homemade devices. They also recorded their activities and uploaded them to platforms such as Instagram and YouTube. These videos encouraged their followers to ignore the police and even gave them advice on how to respond if an officer asked them for identification because they were near the area where an illegal firecracker had been detonated. "Officer, I was just recording, I didn't set it off," was one of the recommendations that an influencer of these dangerous practices gave to his audience on social media.
News of the arrests also reached these European media outlets. As reported by "De Telegraaf": "Several Dutch nationals have been arrested in the Spanish city of Valencia and its surrounding areas after throwing illegal and potentially deadly fireworks at the police. The region has a tradition of setting off firecrackers, but according to the police, foreigners are increasingly abusing them. The newspaper emphasizes that what has happened in the city during the Fallas has been "real battles."
Search engines on these media outlets' websites show a large number of results related to firecrackers. They compile news of injuries caused by dangerous fireworks (there are quite a few). Even beyond traditional media, forums for German citizens comment on the Fallas in Valencia. Users criticize the use of firecrackers during the festivities (accustoming them to the fact that fireworks, far from being a spectacle, become a danger).
The devices detonated in the Valencian capital have caused a stir among residents. A "mega-firecracker" caused a sinkhole one and a half meters deep. The explosion broke the windows of several patios in the area, on Gas Lebón, Tomás de Montañana, and Fuencaliente streets. "Even the building shook," a resident who says he lives on the street where the explosion occurred told the X network.
Firefighters were able to locate the explosion site by using thermal imaging cameras and detecting "a higher temperature than the rest" at the point of the explosion. Forensic Police officers also responded to the scene to collect what appear to be fragments of the mega-firecracker on Tomás de Montañana Street, several meters away from the point of detonation.
This is not the first massive explosion to occur during the Fallas. Another brutal explosion and a huge cloud of smoke already frightened dozens of Valencians who were enjoying the night of the Ofrenda or participating in it. It was launched around midnight in the old riverbed and also triggered a police intervention, although the perpetrators of the launcher were also not found.

ach ja, er staat weer vanalles op youtube en die 10kg flash beuker is ook niet handig geweest, allemaal figuren met 3 hersencellen die alleen maar voor palau komen en verder geen ene kut van fallas weten.
er nu word opgeroepen on NOG strengere handhaving, helemaal prima
ik heb trouwens nergens last van gehad, en je kon gewoon stoken tussen de locals in de parkjes als je wilde moet je alleen niet continu met 2 grammers doen.

Voor mij al een jaar of 15 geleden dat ik er voor het laatst geweest ben. In 2009/2010 ook al een aantal keer meegemaakt dat na de avondshows onze tasjes met wat cakes en knallers in beslag werden genomen. Destijds werd elk jaar de gehele rivier bedding vol gegooid met Borrachos van bovenaf, vooral na afloop van de shows. Dat waren voornamelijk Spaanse jeugd. Maar toen werd ook gewoon alles wat ze bij wie dan ook tegen kwamen in beslag genomen. Ook een aantal keer gezien dat voornamelijk Engelsen met hun grote dronken bakkes zo hard werden neer geknuppeld dat ze met de ambulance afgevoerd moesten worden. Optreden kan de Spaanse politie wel

echt schuilen voor die borracho's na de shows en idd er werd toen al zat en beslag genomen, vooral de nummer 4's.maar dat was alleen maar de lokale politie nu loopt er echt veel policia national en die maken echt geen grappen.

Ja dat waren prachtige tijden. Toen was het uniek als er een 2" candle of 2,5 " shelleke de lucht in ging bij Palau tussen verder alleen maar het Spaanse consu spul. Weet niet meer precies welke editie de aanvaring tussen de flessen gooiende lijm snuivers was bij Palau, maar de jaren erna is het rap achteruit gegaan met het publiek wat Fallas bezoekt. Maarja mooie herinneringen aan de edities 2006 t/m 2010dat waren toen wel de jaren bij het voetbalveldje
maar dat was alleen maar de lokale politie nu loopt er echt veel policia national en die maken echt geen grappen.

Kreeg nog bonje met een busje vol van de Nacional bij Palau toen ik met de vrouw terug fietste van de Mislata beuker.
Worden we eerst vóór de hekken bij Palau tegengehouden door undercovers, geen vuurwerk, ok rij maar door. De hekken rond Palau waren aan de zijkant een stukje open geschoven dus ik denk, mooi kunnen we door de bedding doorfietsen naar Las Artes. Fietsen we naast de vijver bij Palau komt er een stelletje van die opgewonden pikkies in een bus al toeterend aangesjeest, HEY, HEY, HEYYYYYY....Wij stoppen, sturen ze ons weer terug!!
Ik in het Spaans uitleggen dat hun collega's ons net er langs hebben gelaten met de mededeling "rij maar door" maar nee hoor.....

jammer dat ik jullie niet gezien heb, hoorde wel van paul dat florine mij had gezien bij fallasfestival maar wie weet, gaan jullie naar masters dit jaar ?
ik ga voor het eerst, 3 jaar ( 4 jaar inclusief het corona geneuzel ) niks kunnen doen door de thuis situatie hier, nu weer mooie tripjes aan het plannen.

The 2026 Fallas will bring more restrictions on the use of fireworks
The Local Security Board proposes making mandatory recommendations such as reducing the hours for setting off firecrackers or improving the evacuation of spectators during the "mascletaes" (firework displays).

Valencia City Council will convert some of the recommendations of the Fallas Ordinance, approved annually by the Local Government Board with guidelines on the use of fireworks, into mandatory ones. It will also adopt new security measures related to the capacity of the various events and will recommend to the Valencia Provincial Council, owner of the bullring, that the departure and entry times for bullfighting events on the Fallas calendar not coincide with the arrival and departure times of the public during the mascletaes (firework displays), to avoid crowding in the vicinity of the City Hall square. With the same objective, discussions have already been held with ADIF (Railway Infrastructure Administrator) to facilitate the rerouting of those arriving or departing from the Estación del Norte during this same time slot.
This was agreed upon by the Local Security Board, the body that facilitates coordination between the various administrations to ensure citizen safety. It met in an extraordinary session convened by Valencia City Council to analyze the actions and interventions carried out during the last Fallas festival and adopt measures to address uncivil acts involving fireworks, such as the explosion that occurred on March 20th on Tomás de Montañana Street, which injured a municipal cleaning contractor and caused damage to public streets, homes, and courtyards in the area.
"The coordination of the various security forces and bodies during the Fallas festival has been extraordinary in terms of controlling the use of fireworks," explained Jesús Carbonell, Councilor for Citizen Security. He added, "It has been very satisfactory, despite some isolated incidents that occurred after the Fallas Festival had ended, which demonstrates that the perpetrators could not have used this material during the festival."
Jesús Carbonell indicated that the meeting also addressed "how to intercept illegal fireworks arriving in the city by courier." "We have suggested intensifying controls on the distribution of illegal fireworks arriving in the city from abroad through parcel deliveries to hotels and tourist apartments, while allowing other administrations and security forces to move in this direction, as this is not the responsibility of the City Council and the Local Police," he explained.
Carbonell added that the Local Security Board also discussed the need to increase penalties for the misuse of fireworks. "Although the crimes depend on the criminal code," he clarified, adding: "In administrative matters, we will be very vigilant in controlling this type of criminal activity, as we have done this year, when 15 arrests were recorded."
Finally, the councilor reiterated his "satisfaction with the efforts made by the local government, which have been recognized by professionals in the pyrotechnics sector," and praised "the willingness of all those involved in the Local Security Board to adopt improvement measures to guarantee the safety of the 2026 Fallas."

De afgelopen jaren ben ik naar Fallas geweest en daar hoorde je regelmatig types opscheppen over hoe makkelijk ze spullen vanuit verschillende landen naar hun hotel of appartement konden krijgen. Wat die gasten zich niet realiseren, is dat er behoorlijk wat Nederlandse en Duitse agenten rondlopen die zich mengen onder de relschoppers om informatie te verzamelen. Vind het wel ironisch dat dit nu ook gewoon via de media naar buiten wordt gebracht. Ik heb begrepen dat alle verhuurders nu moeten melden wanneer er nederlandse/duitse toeristen hun onderkomen huren, zodat er op voorbaat al controles uitgevoerd gaan worden. Ze gaan dat echt flink aanpakken.
