Pyrotechnics and those businesses that manufacture fireworks, stage displays or sell fireworks year-round will have to get a license before the busy season this year.
Starting July first, those fireworks businesses must obtain a license from the state fire marshal under a new law, signed today by Governor Kathleen Sebelius.
The bill wouldn't apply to businesses or groups selling fireworks only around the July 4 holiday.
The law was supported by the Kansas Fireworks Association. That group says the licensing fees could be used to pay for state background checks on
manufacturers and sellers.
The state is losing federal homeland security dollars that have covered the cost of background checks in the past. The bill would raise $36,700 in fees for the state in the fiscal year beginning July 1.
