Funchal's festive fireworks return

FunchalFunchal, familiar to one football star, will see fireworks in its dark skies reflected on the Atlantic Ocean.

The Portuguese island, home to Cristiano Ronaldo, football's brightest young star, will celebrate its Atlantic Festival with nightly fireworks above its picturesque harbour.

Ronaldo, who lights up the pitch for Manchester United and Portugal, has opened a boutique in his home town of Funchal in time for the influx of visitors attracted by the scintillating pyrotechnic displays.

Every Saturday in June the night sky will light up, although the footballer will not be involved; instead, competing teams from different countries will entertain audiences who view the shows from the land or from boats in the harbour or out to sea.

Explosions of light and colour will spread across the heavens to the strains of music played on the earth.

As part of the festival there will also be performances of classical music by philharmonic orchestras throughout Funchal's attractive city centre.

With regular flights from the UK arriving at Funchal airport, visiting the city or Madeira island, whether it be for shopping in a star's shop or to watch starbursts, has never been easier.
