A major international fireworks company is taking the first steps to relocate its south-western Sydney factory to a new $5.2 million complex near Goulburn.

Foti Pyrotechnics bought the land at Marulan more than three years ago and is just starting earthworks at the site to begin construction work.

Project manager Tino Foti says the company is looking to employ local residents at the new factory.

"Probably looking at something around 19 full-time staff and in our busy periods like around New Year's Eve and sort of our busier months from October to March we have another 20 or 30 maybe casual staff that could come in in intermittent times," he said.

Mr Foti says stage one of construction on the factory should be completed by June.

He says the company has outgrown its Sydney premises and the move to Marulan will secure the future of the company's domestic and international contracts.

"We wanted to be somewhere where we were still close to major public transport routes like the freeway which obviously is of benefit to us for transport of equipment and goods and stuff like that - we wanted to be close to a work force that we could draw on whether that be from Marulan and or surrounding areas," he said.
