STOCKTON, Calif. - Stockton has banned fireworks for decades, but last year the city discovered a loophole in the law that allowed residents to use some varieties. On Tuesday night, the City Council voted 7-0 to plug that hole, eliminating so-called safe and sane fireworks in an effort to promote safety.

The bottom line for fireworks fans is that the city of Stockton now bans all types of fireworks.

In San Joaquin County, only Escalon, Manteca and Ripon allow fireworks.

The Stockton Police Department can confiscate fireworks, but police said it is difficult to respond to all of the calls reporting pyrotechnic displays.

Earlier this year, the city also announced it has canceled the annual July 4 fireworks show at Weber Point because of safety concerns.
