PASIR PUTEH: Take heart, members of the police force. The Internal Security Ministry is working to improve your lot.

Deputy Minister Datuk Fu Ah Kiow said policemen should not be demoralised by the fact that the Government was not prepared to consider their request for a salary revision.

“Plans are in place to lighten their burden.

“For now, Budget 2007 includes two proposals to increase the allowance for personnel conducting patrols on motorcycles and the living cost allowance for those living in quarters, he said yesterday after opening a fun fair at SRK(C) Kai Chih here.

Under the 9th Malaysia Plan, he added, more staff quarters with modern amenities would be built for the force.

“Do not be disheartened easily. The job of maintaining safety and security in the country is an honourable task. We need the police to be alert always.

“A review of salaries may be acceptable in the future, but not for now, he said.

On another matter, Fu reminded the public that only two types of fireworks – pop-pop and happy boom – were permitted.

Declaring an all-out war against banned firecrackers and fireworks, including home-made versions, he said that with the festive season approaching, the authorities would be on the lookout for offenders.

Fu said parents must be held accountable if their children played with illegal items.

“The move to enforce the ban on fireworks and firecrackers can only be effective if parents ensure that their children are not involved, he said.

He was commenting on “attacks launched over three days earlier this week against a school in Terengganu with home-made explosives, which had injured three Form Four girls. It is believed that a group of wayward students was behind the act
