In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Baldwin City’s Maple Leaf Festival in October, organizers are planning a few fireworks.
Earlier this week, Baldwin City Council members approved organizers’ request to close streets during the Oct. 20-21 festival, which routinely attracts at least 20,000 people. And this year, the festival will kick off on the evening of Oct. 19 with a fireworks display and a special ceremony marking the festival’s golden anniversary.
A downtown improvement project slated to begin soon shouldn’t pose a problem for those attending the festival. On Monday, council members awarded a contract for $1.8 million to Bryant and Bryant, a Halstead construction firm. The project will replace sidewalks and street lights and increase accessibility for people with disabilities.
A stipulation was added to the contract that calls for construction to halt by Oct. 5, even if the project is not completed by then, so downtown will be ready for the festival. If necessary, construction would resume after the festival.
