Presentation of participants in the 16th International Competition (2005)

An innovative experience of municipal cooperation between the cities of Granollers and Tarragona begins.

The Councillor for Festivities of the City Council of Tarragona, Carles Sala, the first deputy mayor of the City Council of Granollers, Francesc Sala, and the representative of the main sponsor, Carrefour, Robert Esteva, presented on 3rd March the six companies participating in the 16th International Fireworks Displays Competition of Tarragona, that will be held between 4th and 9th July 2005.

Nineteen companies from places like the Valencian country, Aragon, the Community of Madrid, Portugal, Italy, UK, Argentina, China and Japan applied to enter for the competition. Last year, most of the participants were either rather new companies that tried to make themselves known at the competition in Tarragona, or more experienced companies that had never fired in Spain and wanted to get promotion from Tarragona. Practically there was none of the oldest companies. However, this year, we have the recovery of a wide range of pyrotechnic companies with a long curriculum and many prizes. The selection committee found it hard to leave some companies out.

Carles Sala pointed out that, apart from the rising prestige of the competition, recognized by the media and by the business sector, the reasons for this difference are basically two. On the one hand, the improvement of the budget to take part in the competition, that has risen to the following amounts:

16,200 (sixteen thousand two-hundred euros, VAT included), for companies with headquarters in Spain within the Iberian peninsula.
18,700 (eighteen thousand seven-hundred euros, VAT included), for companies with headquarters outside Spain or the Iberian peninsula.
On the other hand, the improvement of prizes. This way, the first prize has risen to 8,000 euros, while at the same time the organization has included a special prize thanks to the cooperation agreement between the City Councils of Tarragona and Granollers.

In this sense, Francesc Sala from Granollers explained that the company from the Iberian peninsula with the best classification at the competition in Tarragona will also get the special prize “Festa Major de Granollers (Granollers local festivities) – Trofeu Blancs I Blaus (White and Blue Trophy), awarded by the City Council of Granollers, and the firing of the fireworks display to close the local festivities of this town, for an amount of 13,920 euros (VAT included), which will take place on Sunday 28th August 2005. The White and Blue local festivity of Granollers is one of the celebrations that has lately grown most in importance both due to the popular participation and to the prestige within the calendar of festivities in Catalonia and Catalan-speaking countries.

Characteristics of the six selected companies

Carles Sala explained that this is the first time in Tarragona when (in the international section) there have been more Asian companies than European. On other occasions there were a Chinese, a Japanese company, or one from Hong Kong, but not at the same time. Antoni Caballer, Zaragozana and Romualdo Parente are three historic companies that were founded in 1877, 1866 and at the end of the 18th century respectively. The Chinese Lidu and the Japanese Tamaya are younger companies but with a long curriculum of prizes.

Finally, with the intention to give an opportunity to newer companies, the Valencian Pirotècnia d’Altura, managed by Antoni Zarzoso, is presented as a company of Valencian style (which the public enjoy a lot) that wants to make itself known from the competition in Tarrgona. In fact, the youngest company last year, the Valencian Arco Iris, ended up as the revelation of the 2004 competition. Two of the six companies are firing in the competition of Tarragona for the first time: the Japanese Tamaya and the Valencian d’Altura.

Two of the selected companies participated in the latest Champion of Champions Competition in 1999: Antoni Caballer and Lidu. However, neither has got a place yet for the second Champion of Champions competition that will be held next year and which is expected to be excellent, with the participation of Pirogestion (related to Igual), Ricardo Caballer, Turis and the Italian Francesco Pagano (IPON) and La Rosa Lorenzo.

The competition, even more loaded with pyrotechnic material

The press conference ended with the technical information. So as to have an idea of the fact that the companies are coming with all their artillery ready and with all the available resources, just say that this year 7,711 net Kg. of pyrotechnic material will be used (compared to last year’s 5,600 net Kg of pyrotechnic product).

The firing order

On Wednesday 9th March 2005 at 12:30 at the conference hall of the Town Hall of Tarragona, there was a draw for the firing order of the companies taking part in the next Fireworks Displays Competition that will take place in Tarragona from 4th to 9th July.

The draw was led by the Councillor for Festivities and Youth, Carles Sala, and representatives from four of the participating companies were present: Lidu Fireworks, Pirotecnia Zaragozana, Pirotecnia Antonio Caballer and Pirotècnia d’Altura.

Robert Esteve was also present as the representative of Carrefour, the competition’s main sponsor.

Monday 4th July, 22:30
LIDU FIREWORKS CORPORATION LTD

Artistic Director: Deng Qung Mao
From Nantxang, China

The participation of Lidu Fireworks in 1998 meant a huge intercontinental jump of the Tarragona competition, that for the first time was bringing an Asian company after all the other European participants. Lidu Fireworks won that competition and also took part in the special Champion of Champions contest in 1999, when they got third place. That occasion went down in history. Lidu is a huge company with three great fireworks manufacturing factories. Due to its extension and to its human resources (about 2,000 workers) as well as to their production, it’s one of the biggest in China. From there, Lidu exports to all over the world: Japan, Australia, USA, Europe, etc. The quality and perfection of the forms designed by Lidu and the brightness of their colours are probably their greatest assets. In China they have fired and still fire at the most important events. For example, during the annexation ceremony of Hong Kong to China, at the Asian Games of Shanghai, at several exhibitions in Tiannmen square, like the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Popular Republic of China. Their record includes the first prize at the International Pyromusical Displays Competition in Hull (Canada) in 1996, second prize at the competition in Donostia in 1987 and other participations in San Remo (Italy), Macau, Quebec, Germany, Switzerland and USA.

PIROTÈCNIA D’ALTURA

Artistic Director: Paulino Zarzoso Lara
Altura, Valencian country

The International Competition of Tarragona has always been aware of new and innovative proposals, especially those from Valencia. In this case the competition is giving way to the company from Castelló Pirotècnia d’Altura, that has been working for three generations to take the art of pyrotechnics to many celebrations. Pirotècnia d’Altura was founded in 1930 by Antonio Zarzoso Carot and at the beginning developed in the area of Teruel and Valencian country. Later, with the second generation, Antonio Zarzoso Navarrete widened their area of influence all over Spain. The present factory was built in 1981 so as to leave the urban centre of Altura and adapt to the new safety measures required by state regulations. This company usually fires at the Town Hall square of Valencia during the internationally known “Fallas. Also, they usually fire at the “mascletaes competition during the Magdalena festivities in Castelló, where they won first prize. They have also taken part in important festivities like the St.Joan “Fogueres (bonfires) in Alicante, the Carnival of Aguilas in Murcia, St.Mateu’s festivities in Logroño or the Sanfermines in Pamplona. They are firing for the first time in the competition of Tarragona.
