A Home Office worker pleaded guilty today to possessing bomb-making material at his home.

Callum Atkinson, 19, bought sulphur, hydrogen peroxide, potassium chloride via the internet to film homemade explosions and make fireworks, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

Atkinson, an administrative officer in the Passport Office in Liverpool for the past two years, was arrested after a tip-off in March when police raided the home where he lives with his parents in the Aigburth area of the city. The chemicals were seized by police.

He bought the explosives from a website which Judge Denis Clarke ordered should not be named in case others may try to get the same explosives.

The teenager has been held in custody since his arrest.

Today he pleaded guilty to a single charge of possession of explosive substances under suspicious circumstances for unlawful objectives.

Anthony O'Donohoe, in mitigation, said Atkinson had the materials to make pyrotechnic devices.

He had no intention to harm people, animals or property and had no links to any terrorist activity, crime organisations or held extremist views.

Atkinson was remanded in custody for the preparation of further psychiatric reports, ahead of sentencing on October 20.
