In honor of Harry Robinson’s 30 years of participation in the Ohio River Sternwheel Festival, in particular his work each year on the fireworks display, the annual fireworks show will now bear the longtime businessman’s name.

Officially renamed in 2005, this year’s Harry J. Robinson Fireworks Display will be presented from 9:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday near the Ohio River Levee. The fireworks are launched from a barge out on the water.

After 30 years under Robinson’s direction, the fireworks program now is under the direction of new fireworks chairman Dennis Blauser.

“I’ve seen fireworks shows all over the place, but very few have come close to the Sternwheel Festival, said Marietta resident Jeremy Hughes, 34. “Every year they seem to get better and better and I hope they continue to.

Blauser has been involved in the Sternwheel Festival committee since 1981. He became facilities chairman in 1985, which included working on the closure of the river and assisting with the fireworks planning. He has worked closely with Robinson since that time to prepare for each year’s fireworks display.

“I’ve been exposed to it for a number of years and with Harry’s retirement, it was just natural that I would pick up that portion of the show, he said.

“It’s always been Harry’s baby and it will continue to be Harry’s baby. I’m just following Harry’s lead. Harry did an excellent job with the fireworks and I’m not planning on re-inventing the wheel, Blauser said.

There will be some changes in the fireworks display, as there are each year, Blauser said. There will be some differences in presentation to create more width and depth in the show and some new shells that will be included in this year’s event, he said.

Thousands of fireworks shells will be launched during the fireworks display over the Ohio River. For the past eight years, Pyrotecnico of New Castle, Pa., has been the fireworks company producing the Ohio River Sternwheel Festival fireworks.

The century-old family business is the fourth largest fireworks company in the nation. Pyrotecnico produces more than 1,500 fireworks displays each year in 38 states and internationally.

As it has in the past, the aerial display will be synchronized with choreographed music, which can be heard on WNUS 107.1 FM.

One of the founders of the Sternwheel Festival, Robinson served as chairman of the fireworks committee since the beginning of the festival in 1975 and was responsible for choosing both the fireworks and the music. At the age of 83, he chose to make 2005 his last year as fireworks chairman, handing the responsibility over to Blauser.
