I found this article whilst researching a completely unrelated book its from 'The Strand' Magazine 1895…..’How Explosives are Made’ a look at the work of the gunpowder mills at Waltham Abbey, Essex, England.

Wow, that's genuine "oldskool". Preparing wood logs into charcoal.
These things took precious time, something we definitely lack today...:weird:

You probably know they have a Museum there now, don't you? Royal Gunpowder Mills Have you seen it?

Yes I have been there and its very interesting though a large part of the factory is now gone. They had an exhibition of fireworks there for quite some time as well.

Whilst it is intersting I also find it quite sad, in that the author can see in the production of Cordite that 'in the next European war the carnage would be increased 100 fold' this being pre World War 1 how right he was :sad: .
