Firecrackers exploded Friday at Rock Hill High School during a pep rally, causing some minor injuries, officials said.
A student-faculty basketball game in the school's gym that was part of pep rally festivities before a Friday night game against Northwestern High School was interrupted when someone set off a firecracker.
"As the students were leaving school, someone set off another firecracker," said Lynn Moody, superintendent of Rock Hill schools.
Principal Judy Mobley said the second firecracker was set off in the gym's lobby. Three students, two males and a female, had minor injuries. They were assessed by the school nurse, she said.
"There were no real injuries to treat," Mobley said. "There was a little burn mark on one leg of a girl and a slight burn on a back of another student."
None of the injuries required medical treatment, and the students were released to go home, she said.
Mobley was unable to determine who set off either firecracker.
"We received names of possible suspects, and I'm going to do some investigations off-campus on Saturday," she said. "The investigation will resume Monday."
Punishment could include school discipline, ranging from out-of-school suspension to expulsion. Legal charges also are possible, Mobley said.
"I want the people who did this to know we take this very seriously and we will not tolerate anything that endangers the safety of our students," Mobley said. "We will provide our students with a safe campus where they can learn."
Moody added, "It's most likely a situation of a student or students having fun and playing a practical joke. This isn't funny.
