Valencia City Council has once again increased the budget for its special cleaning and waste collection plan during Fallas, with a 15% increase and a total expenditure of 3,150,000 euros. The council is still trying to square the circle, that is, to keep the city clean while hundreds of thousands of people wander around it idly, and is insisting on adjusting the operation after increasing the 2024 staff by 41%. All of this during the Josefinas festivities, the real impact of which is still unknown, subject to meteorological uncertainty.
According to councillor Carlos Mundina, delegate for Cleaning, the officials have designed the operation in record time, as many workers continue to carry out extraordinary services in the three districts hit by the flood. The Fallas plan started with the Cridà and its effects are already beginning to be felt in the city: up to 2,210 containers are being moved from the streets to facilitate the collection of waste. The council will reinforce the thousand-litre containers by 485 and will supply 347 metal ash containers to the commissions.
One of the main bets this year will be the installation of double yellow and black waste bins, a total of 1,400 distributed in the busiest points of the city: from the Town Hall square to the Brujas square passing through the margins of the old riverbed. Also, and correcting the error of last year, the council will reinforce from tomorrow the provision of portable toilets in the surroundings of the main monuments, usually mistreated by the urine of the uncivilized. This pre-fallas weekend, 50 cabins will be installed in 20 different locations. The operation will also have 51 multipurpose waste removal teams with greater maneuverability and will install chemical toilets during the last days in up to 220 points – 410 cabins in total – with double daily cleaning. The workers of the contractors will use disinfectant backpacks as last year to reach where the machines cannot reach and will clean the Germanias tunnel daily, where thousands of people circulate on their way to Russafa.
In parallel, an advertising campaign will be launched calling for civility and paper bags will be given so that people can deposit – among other waste – sunflower seed shells, which are very difficult to clean. On the other hand, this year recyclable cups will not be promoted.
Finally, regarding the workforce, the new city council device will have an average of 1,800 workers working from March 15 to 18, more than 2,000 between 18 and 19. That is about 50 more workers per day. The shifts will be organized in four phases (first weekend, pre-fallas, fallas, post-fallas) and in total there will be around 12,000 staff days, 4% more than in 2024.
