The Vietnamese Coast Guard and border security forces foiled two attempts this week by smugglers to sneak in more than two tons of firecrackers from China.
Soldiers aboard a patrol boat off the northern Quang Ninh province stopped Wednesday a vessel carrying the contraband near Co To Island.
A few days earlier a border unit in Mong Cai town nabbed a man trying to smuggle in 46kg of Chinese-made firecrackers into Vietnam.
The smuggler, Mai The Hung, is a resident of Hai Phong city.
Firecrackers, traditionally set off during Vietnamese Lunar New Year, or Tet, was banned over a decade ago.
Smuggling them in from China has become an annual feature before Tet, which this year falls on February 17.
