THE Coathanger has been at the centre of some big parties, but this New Year's Eve it is really going to rock.

To mark the 75th, or diamond, anniversary of the Harbour Bridge in 2007, it will shine with a huge gemstone during this year's celebrations.

The sound and light show will feature 21,000 fireworks, 100,000 individual pyrotechnic effects and a centrepiece bridge effect of 1000 shimmering lights.

The bridge will be lit up with the diamond, a coathanger - and a question mark, to encourage revellers to engage in some self-examination.

More than 1 million people were expected at the harbour, the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore, said yesterday. The theme of the celebrations was a diamond night in the Emerald City, Cr Moore said.

During the 9pm family fireworks red slippers like those worn by Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz will be projected onto the bridge pylons and children would be asked to click their heels three times. "This year children will gain unique powers to create something magical on the harbour," Cr Moore said.

The event's creative director, Wayne Harrison, said question marks would be a big part of the theme. "We ask questions of ourselves at New Year's Eve … we are also questioning our national values and what sort of city we want to live in," he said.

Medecins Sans Frontieres Australia is the official 2006 New Year's Eve charity.
