FORT WAYNE, Ind., (WANE) - An apartment fire in Fort Wayne is raising the issue of fireworks safety. It happened Monday night at 418 Wallen Hills Drive. Fire officials say fireworks are to blame.

The blaze started in the bushes and spread to the attic. People were evacuated from the building and luckily, no one was hurt. Fireworks are one of the first things many people turn to to celebrate the Fourth of July. They come in all sizes, shapes and colors, with one thing in common: the potential to be very dangerous.

According to the National Fire Safety Council, Inc. about 8,300 people a year find themselves in the hospital emergency rooms with fireworks injuries. Nearly half of those victims are under the age of 15. So, how can you have your fireworks fun and stay safe too? First of all, it's important to use fireworks correctly and with the appropriate guidelines.

It may seem like common sense but fireworks should only be used outdoors, away from buildings and others. Fire officials also say to have water nearby just in case, and wear eye protection if possible. If you let older children use any, make sure that an adult is there to watch. "It's safe for everyone if you know what you're doing. If you read the packaging and do what it says, then you should have a good time and be safe," USA Fireworks manager Sam Kayser told NewsChannel 15.

Kayser also has some advice for parents: watch out for those sparklers. They can be some of the most dangerous fireworks to use. He says, "If you're buying a sparkler for the kids, buy the bamboo sticks because they fall off as they burn, instead of leaving a hot rod." Jim Murua, Assistant Chief with the Fort Wayne Fire Department adds, "Obviously, you've got a lit fire that is producing some sparks that can land on a child's hands, or in their clothing and even start a fire, so yeah, even sparklers can be very dangerous."

The FWFD recommends attending a professional display, but Murua says if you don't, make sure to follow the local laws and use common sense.
