No supply of firecrackers from China for the Fallas

Pyrotechnic shops and stores suffer supply problems but hope to save the season as there is not much demand in the first week of Fallas

Assortment of firecrackers in a store in Valencia. / irene marilla

«The thing is not like to shoot rockets» . Stubborn and concerned is María Luisa, owner of the Pirotecnia Gori store in Mislata. And that's what her business is about, but this year the euphoria of the return of Las Fallas has caught them in the middle of a supply crisis . “Just when we thought we were going to go back, it turns out that the portages do not stop rising and that on top of that we are left without supplies,” she comments with resignation.

In the streets the firecrackers are already sounding even before the start of the Fallas festival, but even so, the demand for these products in the previous week is contained, especially due to the rise in prices that, continuing with the simile, have skyrocketed for weeks and that in the sector they are already beginning to make holes. More than they already had after two blank seasons.

“The pandemic, together with everything that is happening, has caused a shortage of supply , especially of children's products, the factories in China are closed, the containers have been stuck in the ports, paralyzed, many products are not arriving here” , relates Maria Luisa who also suffers from the exorbitant costs of importing the material that she assures "has tripled".

And so, when it was thought that the Fallas were saved, the supply crisis due to the increase in the cost of materials and that directly affects logistical complications, also limits the number of firecrackers available at these parties.

The suppliers they work with promise them that there will be no problem in the face of the Fallas and that they will have enough firecrackers to sell in the stores, of course the fear and concern are there.

In the mecca of pyrotechnics in Valencia, that is, in Pelayo street, the feeling is the same. The person in charge of the Petardos Valencia store, at number 3, comments that the season is proving to be complicated , not only because of the rise in the prices of firecracker boxes but also because of the problems they face in order to stock up.

"They tell us that the boats are still stopped, that the product does not arrive, for now we believe that there will be enough to just finish the Fallas, but not for more, as the party progresses there will be things that will run out," he acknowledges.

The police activate a "Big Brother" with cameras and drones against pickpockets

The Coordination Center, located in the town hall, receives high-resolution images of the entire square .The technical deployment allows an immediate response against criminals and attend to fainting and health emergencies

The Local Police of Valencia and the National Police have activated the "Big Brother" of the Forces of Order to combat crime and act quickly in health emergency situations during the falleros acts that take place in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

The councilor for Citizen Protection, Aarón Cano, and the regional secretary for Security and Emergency Response, José María Ángel, have shown the press the Cecor -Coordination Center-, from which the Fallas security operation is coordinated 2022.

The councilor explained that through the images that reach the room, located in the València City Hall building, «Local Police officers can observe in detail everything that happens in the square to prevent any type of crime or illegal sale ; and articulate health care if necessary. This operation has been underway since March 1, when the "mascletades" began, and will continue until the holidays are over.

The operation includes all the traffic cameras, plus the security cameras of the town hall, in addition to a high-resolution device that is located next to the municipal fault of the square.

This device is capable of capturing images of a person who is trying to commit a crime, for example stealing a wallet, with such a level of technological perfection that even the wrinkles on the face of the possible criminal can be seen, police sources comment. In addition, its area of action extends towards the Estación del Norte. The two drones of the Local Police have also joined this police device, which also record images and send them to the command center. "It is the first time that the Local Police and the National Police have joined forces in a technological operation of this type," says Cano. In the installation set up in the town hall, the agents have two 60-inch monitors and one 80-inch monitor, where the signals sent by the drones and high-resolution cameras enter.

The weather in Fallas 2022: The Celia storm brings abundant rains and a lot of wind to Valencia

The big week of Fallas is marked by a deep storm that could cause significant accumulations of water

The time in the Fallas 2022 will be marked by a name: Celia. A storm recently baptized by the meteorological services and that is expected to leave rains and especially strong winds in Valencia and the coastal areas of the province, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

It seems the worst possible scenario for the big week of Fallas. And is not for less. After the downpour that fell on the night of the plantà during the last Fallas of September, now a deep cold storm comes to join the festivities of the Fallas revival.

A storm "of great impact"
The storm, which if it finally forms will be called Celia, will take shape between Monday and Tuesday in the west of the Iberian Peninsula and, little by little, will move until it is located in the Spanish southwest. The storm, according to experts, "could be classified as having a great impact" and "predictably will cause rainfall in all or almost all areas of Spain, with the highest intensity corresponding to the eastern half of the peninsula"; that is to say: the Valencian Community.

Despite the uncertainty that still exists since there are still many days left before the 2022 Fallas begin, everything indicates that the situation will be serious. In fact, the Aemet has issued an informative note in which it announces that "significant accumulations" of rain could be reached in the Mediterranean area, especially during two days: Thursday and next Friday, the two days of Offering.

The plantà will not get rid of the rainfall either, although on that occasion the worst will be the wind, which will blow strongly during the previous day, the day of the plantà and the day after: the Fallas awards ceremony.

The weather in Valencia in Fallas, day by day
In general, the weather in Fallas will be rainy every day. At the beginning of the big week, the wind will be the main protagonist and, at the end, the intense rains (at least that is what is expected right now).

In the next few hours, the passage of successive Atlantic fronts is expected to leave rainfall in Valencia starting this afternoon. Tomorrow (zaterdag 12 maart) will be, by far, the best and warmest day of all the days of Fallas 2022.

On Sunday the threat of rain will return and, at the same time, the cold storm Celia will develop off the western coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The storm will remain stationary over the Spanish southwest, where abundant and persistent rains are expected. Cloudiness will arrive in Valencia and it is very likely that precipitation will be recorded from Monday, although the real highlight will be the wind, which will turn to the northeast and will blow with strong gusts, especially on the Valencian coast.

The first days of Fallas
The next day, Tuesday March 15, plantà night, the wind will increase and will continue until the following day: the prize collection day, in which not only strong gusts are expected, but also more than likely rain.

The Ofrenda
The two days of parade to the Mare de Déu dels Desemparats could be, according to the Aemet weather forecast, the most complicated. For those two days, the wind is expected to have died down but the threat of rain is even greater.

According to the information note issued for the occasion by the State Meteorological Agency, it is most likely that as of Wednesday, March 16, "the storm will move to the east, causing instability to move to the Mediterranean area." And the worst thing is that "significant accumulations" of water are expected to be reached in the Valencian Community and Murcia "during Thursday and Friday."

Specifically, a situation of "generalized and persistent rains" is expected, which, if some models are fulfilled, could leave significant accumulated amounts of water.

Saint Joseph and the Crema
The big day of the Fallas 2022 in Valencia, on March 19, San José and cremà day, would be practically identical to the previous two: rain and a lot of cloudiness, with relatively mild but cool temperatures and, of course, somewhat lower than at the beginning of the week, when highs are expected to even touch 20 ºC. For the Ofrenda and the Cremà, the forecast is that the thermometer is around 15-16 degrees at most.

Pirofoc

Jeetje, 110 euro voor een 25 shots blokje? Dat heb ik niet eerder gezien. Gelukkig zijn de Pirofoc prijzen nog redelijk!

Is iemand er al achter of die prijs per stuk is of per 4/5 cakes? 😄

  • Haha

The 60 km/h wind silences the Powder Cathedral and threatens today's mascletà

Blizzards are the worst possible enemy for fireworks, more than rain

The wind is the great enemy of the fires in the Powder Cathedral, since in the event that a carcass explodes in bad conditions, it could fall on the spectators and cause injuries. If there is no strong blizzard, in the event that this fallas occurs, the pyrotechnic material falls within the safety zone, 30 meters away from the spectators, and then it cannot harm anyone.

Yesterday the mascletà that the Zarzoso de Altura Pyrotechnics had to fire had to be canceled when it was within the permitted wind limit. The Fallera Central Board announced the cancellation of the act at the proposal of the Fire Department as it was close to 35 km/h. When gusts of more than 40 kilometers / hour blow, the show cannot be done because the safety of the public is in danger, as determined by the regulations.

Yesterday Aemet announced winds of up to 50 km/h between 12:00 and 18:00. For this reason, at 7:00 am on Monday, Paco Sancho, in charge of fireworks at Pirotecnia Zarzoso, in Altura, was told that the aerial elements of the show would not be fired.
However, "when we had been riding in the square between half an hour and three quarters of an hour, they came down from the town hall and told us that it had to be suspended," he added.

"Very disappointed and disappointed," said Sancho sitting down. After 2 years without being able to shoot in Valencia, «time has not allowed us to shoot, but we have to recover because we have castles, mascletades and events these days in 15 commissions in Valencia and in the Central Fallas Boards of Torrent, Sagunt and Alzira».

problems for the whole week
For the same reasons, today's mascletà, which Ricardo Caballer plans to shoot, is in danger.
"Unless there is a radical change in the weather, today the mascletà will also have to be suspended, since a stronger wind is expected than today and with these conditions it cannot be fired for the safety of people," explains Aarón Cano , Councilor for Citizen Protection, Firefighters and Civil Protection.

Not surprisingly, gusts of 55 and 60 km/h are expected today, which will worsen until Thursday, when up to 70 km/h are predicted; and on Friday, with 65 Km/h.

Ricardo Caballer himself is not very optimistic. “If yesterday it had to be suspended, there is no reason for it to go off today” given that stronger streaks are expected.
Furthermore, there are artistic reasons why pyrotechnicians choose not to fire. “If the permitted level of wind is exceeded, aerial fireworks are not authorized to be fired, but of course, a mascletà is a joint show consisting of ground and aerial fireworks, therefore, if one part cannot be fired, it makes no sense to fire the another, it would be an incomplete mascletà that would not be held in optimal conditions”, says Caballer.

The event scheduled for today is a new generation "mascletà" that was going to be fired "from all points of the square at all times" and that was going to burn 229 kilos of material. The pyrotechnician doesn't think it's even likely that it can be mounted under these circumstances, he laments. Regarding the problems with the rain, the advantage of this assembly, which may be applicable to other future ones, is that it is "totally electric", so it "avoids ignition problems with a fuse". Therefore, "if it rains, nothing happens."

Finally, the Councilor for Festive Culture, Carlos Galiana, explained that, despite the suspension of fireworks that weather conditions may cause, the council "will relocate, throughout the year, the mascletà from yesterday and the other pyrotechnic activities that could be suspended.

The mayor recalls that the Govern del Rialto, «has bet a lot on pyrotechnics; in fact, during 2020 and 2021 we spent the entire budget, and in 2022, we will do the same, although it is not yet possible to establish when.

Kleinere Fallas in 2023 vanwege sterke stijging grondstofprijzen.

Wood and white cork prices lead to smaller Fallas in 2023

The president of the Intergrouping warns that the belt will have to be tightened in the monuments of 2023 due to the increase in energy prices derived from the War in Ukraine

The Fallas group celebrates the “almost one hundred percent” recovery of the festival after two years of the pandemic , but bears the burden of an economic overexertion due to the holding of two editions in just six months of difference and the new setback that it entails the rise in prices, which will force, they acknowledge, to "rethink" their budget for 2023, especially of the Fallas monuments. Materials such as wood or polystyrene (derived from petroleum), fundamental in the elaboration of the fault, have increased their prices in recent months between 25 and 30%, and this leads to the need to "adjust" their cost, which involves reducing the volume of the monument while maintaining quality, says the senior master of the Artisan Guild of Fallas Artists of Valencia, Paco Pellicer.

This year, he explains, "the contracts signed with the commissions two years ago have been towed", in which 75% of the budget foreseen for the failure has been guaranteed, according to the agreement reached by the commissions of the Fallas and the City Council. of Valencia at the beginning of the pandemic. This has meant losses of 50% for the Fallas artists' guild (25% each year), to which must be added the "brain drain" of specialized workers who have "emigrated" to other sectors, since not all they endured with the ERTE, says Paco Pellicer.

“These last two years of the pandemic have been economically bearable for the sector,” he explains, until a new setback has arrived: the rise in the price of energy and fuel, aggravated by the crisis generated by the war in Ukraine, which paralyzed wooden containers in Canada and Africa and has increased the price of some materials by up to 50%. For Pellicer, this situation makes it necessary to "rethink" the Fallas of 2023, in relation to the budget of the Fallas monument, in anticipation of these situations and the increase in the cost of the Fallas, which involves reducing its volume but maintaining quality.

The president of the Intergrouping of the Fallas of Valencia, Guillermo Serrano, agrees with this reflection, since the situation derived from the rise in prices, he maintains, "we are all suffering from it" and it must also be noted in the budget of the failed commissions.

Serrano recalls that the commissions have had to face two Fallas festivities in six months (in relation to those held last September) and this has meant "a great economic effort" that will have repercussions on next year's edition, since it will be necessary to "tighten the belt”, they say from the fallero sector.
