BURY councillors are hoping to introduce a borough-wide ban on the sale of fireworks within the next year.

A letter from Rochdale Council, signed by leaders of the political parties, was sent to Bury Council concerning proposals to stop the sale of the goods to members of the public.

It highlighted concerns about the large number of complaints from residents about the noise and disturbance caused by fireworks and the potential injuries.

The letter congratulated the efforts being made by Rochdale MPs Paul Rowen and Jim Dobbin to make Rochdale the first place in Britain to have a ban.

However, it also pointed out that investigations into the possibility of a pilot ban had led to concerns about the development of a black market' in fireworks.

Councillor Wayne Campbell, leader of Bury Council, showed the letter to members of the Executive during a meeting at Bury Town Hall last week and asked them to support Rochdale's plans.

He also proposed that a scrutiny committee consider bringing a ban on the sale of fireworks into force in Bury.

Coun Campbell said: "I am certainly not against fireworks, but we all know that in the run-up to Bonfire Night, the level of anti-social behaviour is a major concern for many residents. I think the plans that Rochdale are putting forward are a good idea.

"I do not want to jump the gun by suggesting we introduce a ban this November, but it is something worthwhile which we should consider before Bonfire Night next year."

The proposals were welcomed by members of the Executive, who agreed to pass the matter onto the relevant scrutiny committee.
