Hello Pyro's,

Yesterday, to my surprise, I saw an interesting piece of documentary on National Geographic Channel. "Inside: Hong Kong’s Big Bang". A firework celebration ringing in 2006, the Year of the Dog. "How do you plan an event to entertain 7 million people?"

I fell into this documentary when it was already started. It included some interesting segments of the complete start to finish of the fireworks show. It was a show that was fired from three barges. Alledgedly they fired 4.5 tons of fireworks. Interestingly enough the documentary even showed the making of the fireworks in a fireworks factory. That was the part where I first noticed it. You can also get a taste for what it takes to organise a large event in an exotic environment with a very different culture, and in a place where people treat each other differently than you may be used to.
The show designer choreographer was the Canadian Patrice Guy, you can see that Patrice has established a good name for himself as a fireworks show designer. He took part in Montreal and other places. They did not show the full details of the fireworks show, in fact, they showed very little of the actual show. But the NGC documentary was more about the preperations and inside details anyway. The fireworks show had alot of problem with the smoke from the shells. It appeared that they had an inversion layer formed at the burst height, that was hanging like a thick blanket.

I do not have any means to convert my VHS tape, with only fragments on it, to an MPG format or anything yet. But maybe someone is able to record this documentary and put it online. So, this is much like a "Heads Up!" to those who may find this of interest too.

It must piss the Chinese off that they do not have a Chinese designer. If it was real mainland China I bet the Communist Govt would not let it be known that a foriegner was the artist.

Can the Chinese do world class choreography? I cannot recall a Chinese Co taking out any International Comps even though they must turn up with a motherload of product that they could pound the sky with. That could be the problem, they think carpet bombing with shells is art. It is good fun though.

It was common - maybe still is, for foriegn display operators to get many high profile shooting contracts in China. Why cant they design and shoot thier own?

Interesting Sandman... May I ask, through which site were you able to look so far ahead in Dutch TV programming? Or did you contact them? Just curious.

You can find the schedule on the website of national geographic.
I searched for the program inside and all the schedules for the next coming months were shown.
Be carefull this is only for the dutch viewers, I tried for example the Uk website but there are other episodes of inside shown.

The worst documentary I have seen about fireworks. Lousy camera work. It´s all about the problems the show encountered. You only get to see a few minutes of the actual fireworks show and even that is interrupted to expose the behind the scenes problems.

You almost want to scream. Can you please just let me enjoy the show!

I had a bad feeling about it five minutes into the show. I decided not to tape it after all. Believe me, it´s that bad.

Well, depends on how you look at it... I respect your opinion. Clearly you wanted to see the whole show. And I recognize your emotions surely. Yes, I wanted to see that too. But the interesting part for me was in the start, where it was suggested that they supposedly had it's fireworks especially made for that show. That piece has most of my interest now.
I'm still interested if someone was able to capture it.
