The Valencia mascletà has something that attracts all the people who witness it. After the first time, the second, the third always arrives... And each time closer to the fence to be able to live the experience with greater intensity. However, getting the best site has its price. Or rather, his time. The first attendees arrive at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento when the fireworks are still putting on the show and the police hoardings are not yet in place.
This is the case of Lucía García, a neighbor of Benetússer, who, along with her son, had been at the door of the town hall since half past ten in the morning to get the best seat in the front row . Both go to the mascletà every year and follow the same ritual. Loaded with their chairs, they don't mind waiting almost four hours to enjoy the six minutes that the fireworks last. Lucía considers herself very Valencian. "It's worth the wait," she says.
However, these residents of Benetússer are not the only ones waiting in the place. Rafa Santo and José Gorgues, residents of Valencia, waited every day from eleven in the morning to enjoy the mascletà. For them there is no comparison. That is the best site. "It is not the same to see it from here than from a balcony. The final earthquake is spectacular," they acknowledge.
Both indicate that sometimes people try to get ahead of them. "We only let the fence be in front of us. Nobody can get ahead," they conclude.
It is clear that the mascletà does not understand time. It is a passion that many Valencians share. It doesn't matter how many times they come. They are clear: "Whenever we can, we repeat."
