I was recently lucky enough to be called upon to assist Kimbolton Fireworks rig what has been described by some media (although how true it is I really don’t know I’m sure I’ve seen bigger) as the biggest display ever fired in the UK---12 tons (12000- kilograms I think thats the conversion) of fireworks in 15 mins….it took place on 28th June 2005 in Portsmouth, the event was to mark the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. I was only there for 4 days in the lead up to the display, but Kimbolton had full time employees there for a week prior to and a week after the show setting down it was a massive undertaking...the show was designed and programmed by Darryl Fleming and the logistics were dealt with by Simon Page.
The display was fired from 6 Hugh Naval Ammunition Barges (in 3 pairs) in addition there was 36 Pontoons and 2 Boats.
Here are some of my pictures of the set ups and a link to Maddog’s movie which is edited highlights….Hope you don’t mind Maddog!!!
Half of 1 of the 6 barges
Inside one of the holds...there were three of these all the same.
Moored up offshore waiting for the off (Other barges in the distance)
Film courtesy of Maddog (and no hallucination effects )

Southsea was the area where the display was filmed from...
Some Photos taken from Isle of Wight website and others...
Caveat - I spoke to Tony about posting this thread as I didn’t want to offend anyone, I’m sorry if the mention of the defeat of Napoleon’s Navy does cause offence to anyone. During the recreation of the Battle, that preceded the display on the day, rather than it being the British – v – French/Spanish 'the powers that be' decided that the opposing fleets were to be called 'the Red' and 'the Blue' fleet…personally I think its political correctness gone mad - the past is the past and we move on…
