What is a sky lantern?

Khoom Fay Lanterns (Sky Lanterns) are very Chinese traditional which is first invented and found in the history of “The Three-Kingdom Period’. It is to be taken as a signal of the armies.

People now launch it to convey their wishes to the heaven. Words might be written by people themselves to particularly specify their wishes.

Festivals, celebrations, weddings, birthdays and even friends or family gatherings are the best occasion for launching. Sky Lanterns are no doubly your ambassadors of wishes. It is even more magnificent if you launch hundreds the same time.

In the recent years, Sky Lanterns are much likely to be adopted by the Fireworks Display groups as a perfect supplement to their shows as well.

Others may take it as a symbol of health, longevity, happiness, auspiciousness and prosperity.

How to light it?

How to Light it?
Setp 1: Carefully take out the lanterns from the package. It is very thin and light, any harder steps might lead to the break of the lanterns. Write on your wishing words on the lanterns with the pens before lighting, which is said to be important for a wish-making lantern. And it is no need for this step if it is a special ordering printed lantern. Unwrap the lanterns; Lift it up a bit to let more air in to the space. Unfold the attached squared fuel, stick it with the cross frame. Make sure it is well balanced to better control the launching.
Step 2: Hold up the top of the lanterns to ensure it is well unwrapped, light each corner of the fuel.
Step 3: Turn to hold the bottom of the lanterns when it is fully filled with hot air. It starts to be lighter and a bit up-lifting while, in the mean time, you softly let it off of your hand. Now it is the time to make a wish.

Hello and welcome on this board.

First thing I want to say, it's no need to post 4 times in 3 minutes as it's one story.

To come to your story.

- In the Netherlands it's prohibited to release sky lanterns, some people may think different about this issue but it's what the Dutch Law says so! For festivals etc.. there's a possibility, you could ask for a special license, weeks before the event, with some instances.

- At Firework shows or events, there would also be other circumstances. They would need to forfill to that special licence and I'm affraid the insurrance companies wouldn't be that happy, because the lanterns will come down to earth again but not on the shooting terrain but far outside.

- You're posting in the international forum, the above just counts here in the Netherlands, the rest of the world is a complete different story. For example Germany, or the U.K. What I've heard it's free to release the lanterns, offcource several miles away from airports.

My personal opinion is, that's very nice to use the lanterns with firework displays. For example the Loy Krathong festival in Thailand. At this festival (full moon) people will launch thousands of these lanterns, also known as Khom Loi, at the same time. It really gives you a amazing view, some people also add some small fireworks under the lanterns, effects like a silvery tail. At the same time there's a fireworks display. Really amazing and I hope to see this in the near future in Europe also. Here's a small video with some fireworks and lanterns in it, it's taken at the Loy Krathong festival.
