Fireworks are everywhere in Palestine, with several displays a day during the summer wedding peak. But during Ramadan, residents are voicing their annoyance. A group in the northwestern West Bank city of Qalqilia is appealing the district Governor, police and security agencies to put an end to the intense fireworks displays during Ramadan.

Their sleep is affected, children are being burned and injured, the animals are frightened, and at times it is difficult to differentiate between the explosions of fireworks and the explosions of Israeli gun, tank and missile fire.

The Chamber of Commerce Chairperson in the Qalqilia District addressed a letter to the Governor. “The phenomenon of using explosives, especially in the month of Ramadan and the holy Eid, has increased and has became disturbing and frightening for the citizens in their homes, those praying in mosques, or shopping. That is in addition to the impact of the injury to many of the children through burning and mutilating their faces and bodies.

He added, “We call on all parties, particularly the Governor, to prevent the sale of all explosives to all businesses, especially imports.

Several petitions were submitted to the Municipality of Qalqilia City to prevent shops from selling such explosives, with requests to cut the water and electricity of those that did not comply.

Qalqilia Mayor Wajeh Quwas told PNN, “The Municipality can play a significant role in the fight against this negative phenomenon that is inconsistent with the values of our people who suffer under occupation.

The Mayor continued, “Through a forum for meetings we call on all citizens to prevent their children from buying the explosives, which are burdensome economically and socially frightening.
