PENDLE Council is to take over the annual Barnoldswick Firework Festival after the town council decided it was too much of a responsibility for them.
Coun. David Whipp told the council's Executive: "It attracts people from all parts of Pendle, but also a significant number are drawn in from across the region, so it has a tourism effect.

"I propose we do agree to promote the Pendle Pyro display in Barnoldswick and fund it from the events pot. We should establish a small working group of councillors to oversee the project."
Coun. Allan Buck said he felt the council could build on the successful of the event. He explained: "I think we have got to look to rolling this sort of event out across Pendle - maybe several venues next year."
However, Coun. John David was not in favour. He said: "I don't understand why people like firework displays. They frighten every dog in the area. Most dogs are terrified by this kind of fireworks. The bigger the bang, the more people 'ooooh'. I think they should be banned – full blooming stop, chairman!"
However, Coun. Whipp said Barnoldswick had benefited from the event, the town council taking it over around 20 years ago from the Rotary Club.
He explained: "By producing well-organised, safe, spectacular displays, you reduce the need to have back garden bonfires and firework displays, which means a more spectacular and safer Pendle. It got backing from Pendle Community Safety Partnership on that basis.

"I would like to see a fireworks festival with displays in Nelson, Colne, etc. We would then get people staying over for a few nights, like Southport's Fireworks Festival." Coun. Tonia Barton said: "I would support organised displays. I have been to several." She said she had had a dog which had to be given sedatives because of fireworks going off in the streets.
