Valencia cancels the Fallas 2020

City Council and Fallas entities agree to accept the cancellation of the party

Elena Martinez M. Domínguez, Jaume Vidagañ 05/13/2020 | 17:15

The sanitary conditions do not allow the celebration of the Fallas with a minimum of guarantees. For this reason, the festivities are definitively canceled and are transferred, as has happened with other festivals, to their 2021 edition. The majority feeling is that there is no indication that advises its celebration in July, as planned.

The festivities that were left to celebrate are canceled, the monuments will not be destroyed, but will be kept awaiting a feasibility plan that guarantees continuity as a profession for the artists from Fallas.

Valencia has already made a decision and that is to cancel the 2020 Fallas. There will be no failures in July as proposed two months ago when the state of alarm was declared and the parties were suspended as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

In a press conference before the media that started at 6:00 PM, Ribó pointed out that "at the moment, things are not as we had planned, they are more complicated." "We have met this morning with Fallas delegations and federations, the Fallas guild and representatives of the Fallas. It has been an intense and emotional meeting, but we have reached a proposal for an agreement that will have to be ratified. We have reached the conclusion , agreed, that it is preferable to do all the fallas celebrations in 2021, next year.
The mayor of Valencia has clarified that "everything possible and impossible has been done to find alternatives, but this was the best option. Health comes first and we are talking about a pandemic that has led to many people and that, although it is low minimum in the Valencian Community, we do not have any degree of security ".

He also wanted to clarify that it was said "that any celebration in July would depend on the health situation. Now, this situation reminds us that we cannot carry out any celebration." Ribó stressed that they are working on "a specific plan to support the party and we are going to make a proposal so that the Falleras Mayores de València in 2020 and their courts of honor remain in office until 2021."

He also pointed out that they take "into account the cultural and economic repercussions of the Fallas, starting with the artists from Fallas, the hospitality industry, the florists, the fireworks and the musicians." For this reason, a strategic plan will be established to guarantee the viability of Fallas artists. "Today is a day in which we feel the heat and the joint work of the entire fallero world, of which we are very proud," concluded the mayor, who gave way to Carlos Galiana.

The Councilor for Festive Culture, Carlos Galiana, has begun his speech by giving a message of support "to the Magdalena de Castelló and the Hogueras de Alicante festivals. I would have liked to address you differently. But this pandemic forces us to make decisions . "

"Two months ago, when the Fallas 2020 were postponed, we managed in less than 24 hours to obtain a date and financing for the party. Today, after days consulting the health services, we know that it is impossible to know how de-escalation and new normal. A few days ago, we thought we would be in Phase 1 and we are not, so the numbers do not come out, "he said.

Galiana has announced that "the Gran Fira Valencia and all its activities are suspended. We will propose to the Assembly of Presidents that Consuelo and Carla maintain their positions in the academic year 2021-21 and I encourage the rest of the Falla commissions to do the same. convinced that the heart cannot be separated from this party, which is pure feeling. "

"Finally, I want to send an illusion message. Fallas and falleras are made of fireproof material. We will be reborn from our ashes," he concluded.

Puig: "It is a general pardon that no one would have wanted"
The president of the Valencian Generalitat, Ximo Puig, has affirmed this Wednesday that the definitive suspension of the 2020 Fallas is "a historic measure", a "general pardon that no one would have wanted", and has urged thinking "now" in 2021.

"The definitive suspension of the Fallas 2020, agreed by València, is a historical measure that hurts hundreds of thousands of people. So much work, so much illusion ... a general pardon that no one would have wanted. Let's think already in 2021, there are 310 days for Cremà ", he has written on his social networks together with a photograph of a burning monument.

Suspension of other parties
Yesterday there was a turn in regards to the celebration of the great popular festivities of the Valencian Community. In a matter of an hour, both Alicante and Castelló canceled their respective parties, the Hogueras and the Magdalena in 2020, something that made the celebration of the Valencian festivities this year a compromise. Throughout yesterday afternoon, large local fault boards such as Burriana, Gandia and Torrent also made the decision to suspend their failures this year. To date, many Valencian towns have postponed their fallas until after the summer and others still do not have a date.

A few failures in July
On March 10, the decision was made to postpone the Fallas 2020 until July of this year when the coronavirus pandemic gave a breather and the state of alarm will rise. Much has happened since then. In that appearance in El Palau, the president of the Genelitat, Ximo Puig, accompanied by the Consell, indicated that the "most convenient" thing was to postpone the festivities. It was a decision made according to the Health reports that advised against the celebration of the holidays. Today, two months later, the decision is made to cancel them until next year.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pyrotechnicists ask that not all Fallas be held in July

The union proposes that the places not dependent on the JCF can change their dates - Promoters of musical events warn of the saturation of acts in the summer and the impossibility of reaching all

Pyrotechnicians, musicians
and marching bands, and organizers and promoters of musical events such as disco cars, festivals or pyromusical castillos have been severely affected by the election of July 15 to 19 to celebrate the Fallas 2020.

The decision has been taken "unilaterally"
, affirms the prestigious pyrotechnician Ricardo Caballer, or as the music producer Vicente Ferrer says, "only those who mount and burn the Falla have been taken into account, but none of the other sectors related to the party like music or leisure ».

The coincidence of the July Fallas with the celebration of the Virgen del Carmen Festival and with other summer festivities is a serious problem for pyrotechnicians and professionals who live from musical acts such as festivals and orchestras. "We will have to multiply but we will not be able to attend the events and" cremaes "of Valencia and the rest of the towns, and also to the festive events of fifty municipalities in the Valencian Community," emphasizes Ricardo Caballer.

In a meeting held two days ago in the Valencian association Piroval, the Valencian fireworks showed their discomfort because they had not been consulted when it came to moving the party to July. Not surprisingly, Caballer doubts that the national pyrotechnic industry "has sufficient capacity" to produce what is necessary to service the Fallas in Valencia and dozens of cities, and at the same time, fireworks at the patron saint and popular festivals. from a multitude of Valencian municipalities.

That is why a solution that he proposes - once the coronavirus health crisis is overcome "which is the first thing we have to focus on", he points out - is to give freedom to the towns and cities that do not depend on the Fallera Central Board to make their fallas parties on other dates than July. So for example if Gandia, Cullera, Alzira, Paterna, Torrent, Aldaia, Alaquàs, Lliria, Benaguasil, Carcaixent, L'Eliana? to cite just several examples, they could celebrate their fallero acts when they best fit according to their own celebrations, the measure would also benefit these economic and productive sectors that work for the fallas but also for other activities such as the Moors and Christians or the festivals employers.

Recover half of the activity
For fireworks, explains Ricardo Caballer, if only the Fallas de València and the 4 dependent towns of the JCF were held in July, there would be "another 50 percent of our activity" that could be "liberated, deseasonalized and celebrate those pyrotechnic acts on other dates such as May, September or October ». Therefore, more quality service could be given to the Fallas and the other patron saint festivals. Especially if it is taken into account that the pyrotechnic acts of fallas are contracted by commissions in many cases, but those of the town festivals have even more budget because they are paid by the municipalities, which means more income for fire professionals.

In similar terms, the musical producer Vicente Ferrer, who organizes turnkey musical and leisure events, and for whom the cancellation of the Fallas in March has been a hard blow, expressed himself in similar terms. Ferrer is very upset with the Valencian authorities because they have not had anyone "beyond those who make the falla" and that will lead to serious future problems. For the DJs, the stage setters, the sound and light technicians, the catering companies, the firms that set up bars and tents, the security personnel?

All these subsectors, says Vicente Ferrer, have received a huge economic stick with the suspension of the Fallas in March, which will not be offset by the move to July, given that "we already have many contracts signed to hold popular festivals and we are not going to to get to everything ». "We will try to multiply ourselves," says this show promoter, "but it will be necessary to adapt to circumstances if a solution has not been found from here to there. There are already companies, he says, that have had to make layoffs and ERE.

EDIT: I see now that @activi (Thanks Victor!) has already made a topic with this news, but I will leave the translated news article also at the top in this topic.
