Las Fallas decide today their most audacious change in the last 30 years

Just after the commemorative activities of the World Heritage Site, the world of the Fallas faces tonight the most audacious decision-making of the last 35 years. And at that time it was, really, a municipal decision on an issue in which the failure commissions did not participate directly, such as moving the fireworks castles, Nit de Foc included, from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento to the Jardin del Turia. Now it is indeed two measures in which the protagonists are the commissions and, therefore, must have their endorsement. They are, in addition, two modifications that came to force last September and that have not displeased, which is why it is proposed to leave them permanently.

It is taken for granted that one of them will succeed: advance the "cremà" by two hours: the children's ones, at eight in the afternoon; the big ones, from ten o'clock -or when the firefighters arrive- which will drag, in turn, the municipal fault to burn at eleven o'clock at night.

The other is more complicated and may meet more resistance, although on paper it also has many arguments in favor: transferring four fallas sectors to a morning session of the Offering. To be celebrated from half past nine in the morning of March 18. This change has both pros and cons and will therefore generate more debate. Also, the JCF proposal arrived at the end of the week. It would be a question of establishing a new time order in such a way that, once it was reestablished, every five or six years approximately, it would be necessary to participate in the morning session.

The downside to this session is that you have to get up early. The advantage, that whoever gets it knows that he has his two great afternoons of the Fallas week, the 17th and the 18th, expedited. In addition to that, in this way, the closing of the act is done at a more civilized hour, around eleven o'clock at night.

Some sectors have problems, such as Zaidía, Russafa A and B and Pla del Remei-Gran Vía, which on the 18th in the morning have tributes to Maximiliano Thous and Maestro Serrano, in which case they would have to be relocated.

This change is independent of the year in which the traditional tours of San Vicente y Paz are recovered, currently affected by the works in the Plaza de la Reina.

In any of the cases, and being in Heritage times, none of these modifications damages one of the requirements demanded by Unesco, such as maintaining the ritual sequences of the intangible manifestation approved in Ethiopia. Both proposals have the approval of the board of the Fallera Central Board. Councilor Carlos Galiana did not hesitate to praise his virtues in the past plenary session. The "cremà", for what it means to offer more normal hours, especially for what it means to burn at dawn until the firefighters arrive. And of the offering he gave his own example: "I had to parade in the morning in the Fallas of September and beyond the heat that began to do, and that now there will not be, you already have the two days available." The president of the Interagrupación, Guillermo Serrano, He also believes that the advance of the «cremà» will be accepted without too many problems «because it also allows children to burn at a good hour and even see the big fault burn. It is also a decision that reconciles more when the next day you have to go to work. Interestingly, it is more "traditional" to burn at midnight than to have two sessions of Offering, but it is the modification of the time of the fire that has the best chance of changing.

Las Fallas approve to advance their "cremà" by two hours to avoid ending at dawn

One of lime and one of sand. And you could see it coming. The assembly of presidents approved the advance of the hours of the "cremà", but ruined the morning session of the Offendra.

The first obtained a clear adherence: 172 votes in favor and 52 against. Among the arguments in favor, rationalize the schedules. When it burned at twelve o'clock seventy years ago, there were not so many faults nor did they need fire engines going from fault to fault. Now that does happen and the dawn ends very late. From now on, the children's fallas will be burned at 8:00 p.m. (8:30 p.m. the winner of the Special and 9:00 p.m. the municipal one) and the major ones at ten o'clock at night. At half past ten the winner of the Special; at eleven o'clock the municipal one and between twelve and one those who go in the queue of the fire department. But it is no longer burning at three or four in the morning.

It is, curiously, a very substantial change from "tradition." Midnight has been the particular witch hour of the party. But the circumstances now are very different. The assembly opted for the pragmatism of change.

Now, this change must be endorsed with the approval of the Celebration Program, which will arrive next month. Both the plenary and the assembly. Obviously, with such an endorsement, there will be no problem.

Disappointing argument

Then came the debate about holding a third session of the Offering: on the 18th in the morning. There the vote against fell like a jug of cold water. It gave the impression that Carlos Galiana did not believe it: "I thought that the debate would be about the occupation of Ciutat Vella, but they have only talked about something else." Of the revelry and the verbena. Because the only argument put forward to vote against was that how to go to the Offering, having to get up early, with how late it ends at night, especially if the restrictions are over.

To understand each other, the festival and the disco mobile (it was not even suggested to change them for late nights) were prioritized over a parade that left the afternoons and nights of the 17th and 18th "clean". Neither should it be surprising: the inexorable process of nighttime at the party has gone ending with an essential element of it, the "awakening", which has been dying for decades.

The conclusion was that the boys and young girls would not go to the Offering. Even declines in the census were ventured in that case.

Nobody asked what happens with the "mascletaes" in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. If it could be inconvenient for that parade. The incidence, as pounding as it was hurtful, was that it is incompatible with finishing so late.

Just a couple of complementary and somewhat more coherent arguments: the sectors, such as Zaidía, that have the tribute to Maximiliano Thous (although it may well be reformulated in the afternoon); the doubts of peripheral sectors for having to go even earlier and, above all, a big mistake by the JCF: presenting the proposal at the weekend, without time for the committees to show it at their meetings. And it would not have been bad to show a simulation of five or six years for the people to understand. Although, given what we have seen, the important thing is not to get up early, it is not that it matters too much.
